Two kinds of free, and only one is reliable
Conversion LUTs from the manufacturer. DJI, Sony, Canon, Panasonic and GoPro all publish the files that map their flat profiles back to Rec.709, for nothing, on their own support pages. These are the ones to trust: whoever built the recording curve built the conversion.
Creative packs. The "500 free cinematic LUTs" download, usually in exchange for an email address. Some are genuinely good. Most are variations on the same teal-and-orange curve at different strengths, which is why a pack of two hundred often contains about six ideas.

The one the manufacturer publishes
If you shoot log, this is the file that matters. The specifics are in the per-camera pieces — D-Log to Rec.709 for DJI, S-Log3 to Rec.709 for Sony, and GoPro's flat profile — and the rule across all of them is the same: match the file to the exact gamma *and* gamut the camera recorded, not just the brand.
One known trap: some DJI .cube files declare their size with a tab character
where the format expects a space, and ffmpeg refuses them. The file is not
corrupt and re-downloading will not help. Tools that parse strictly say your LUT
is invalid; tools that read around it say nothing at all.
Judging a creative pack
Install one, not all two hundred. Then:
Look at it on your own material. A look that sings on the vendor's beach sample may fall apart on an indoor shoot at 3200 ISO, and the thumbnail grid in the download tells you nothing about that.
Look at it at less than full strength. Most free looks are authored strong, because strong demonstrates well. At 50–60% a lot of them become usable, which is a better test than deciding at 100% that the pack is garbage.
Check what it does to skin. The fastest way to find a bad LUT is a face. Skin tones going orange, magenta or plastic is the tell, and it will not show on a landscape.
Check the gradients. A 17-point LUT can band on a clear sky where a 33-point
one does not. If the pack does not say, open the .cube in a text editor — the
LUT_3D_SIZE line is the second or third one.
The part nobody budgets for
A free pack is free to download and not free to use. Two hundred files in a
folder with names like Cinematic_Teal_04_final.cube is an organisation problem
that costs more than the files did, and it is the reason most people end up
using three looks forever.
Previewing them one at a time in an editor is the slow path: import a clip, apply, look, undo, repeat. Common questions
Are paid LUTs better than free ones?
Sometimes, and not reliably. The useful difference is usually authoring: a paid pack more often states what footage it was built for, which is the information that determines whether it works on yours.
Can I use free LUTs commercially?
Usually, but read the licence in the download. Manufacturer conversion LUTs are made to be used on your footage. Some free creative packs restrict redistribution rather than use, which is a different thing.
Do I still need a creative LUT if I have the conversion?
No. A conversion gets you to a correct, neutral image, which is a perfectly good place to stop — and the right place to stop if the client is going to grade it themselves.
How many LUTs does anyone actually need?
One conversion per camera, and two or three looks. The rest is a collection, and collections are why previewing on your own frame matters more than acquiring more files.
